Getting Ready for Summer

Winter’s done at last, but before we rush headlong into summer here are some housekeeping tips:

This is a good time of year to get your heating system’s annual tune-up and preventive maintenance. Over the winter soot and other residues have been building up on your boiler or furnace and now those residues will harden and become increasingly difficult to remove. The sooner you can get things cleaned up the better.

Make sure your air conditioning condenser is clear of leaves and other debris.

Before you need your air-conditioning system in earnest, check that it’s working as it should be: change the filters, set the thermostat to “cool” and test the system by lowering the thermostat temperature setting. If the air conditioning doesn’t kick in, check your electric panel to make sure no breakers are tripped. If if still doesn’t work or the system switches on but doesn’t give adequate cooling and you can’t figure out why, call us and we’ll send a technician over—don’t wait till the hot summer is in full swing, get in now before there’s a rush!

Summer Energy-Saving tips:

If you haven’t done so already, swap out your traditional thermostat for a programmable version—it’ll save you money.

If you’re running Air Conditioning, turn up your thermostat’s temperature setting—for every degree above 72°F you’ll save as much as 1-3% on your energy.

Rig up a washing line and air-dry your laundry! But if you do use your dryer, be sure to run it on full loads only and don’t forget to clean the lint trap before (or after) each use.

Close the shades during the day—keeping the sunlight out will help keep the heat down.
